New Home Professionals supports our temps in finding their dream jobs with consistent training, performance reviews, and educational opportunities. We have seen and supported many agents in getting hired on with home builders full-time, and we know what it takes, so we have put together ten tips for landing your dream job in new home sales.

  1. Constantly Be Improving. Use your down time to research trends in new home sales, take classes, and build relationships that will work to your advantage when you get an interview.
  2. Be Persistent in Selling Yourself. There will be other agents competing for the job you want, so make an extra effort to stand above the rest. After you have worked for the builder as a temp, send the sales manager a thank you email, or better yet, a hand-written thank you card. Explain what you loved about their company and how you think you could add value to their team.
  3. Record a Professional Sounding Greeting on Your Voicemail. Sales managers tire of hearing a machine’s voice when they call you. Record a friendly and professional greeting that will leave them excited to hear back from you.
  4. Format Your Resume. A resume is your first impression to an employer, so make yourself look great. Little will make a manager cringe more than opening a word document that is poorly formatted. Make your resume stand out with color, a picture of yourself, and interesting career highlights. If you need support on this, just go to YouTube and search Resume Formatting for easy, DIY ideas.
  5. Follow the Company You Want to Work for on Social Media. This is a step too many job seekers forget. Follow, like, and share your prospective employer’s posts. They will notice this and it will make you stand out over the pack.
  6. Prove Your Value. Research the builder, the community, and their policies. Consider ideas that would help improve sales, or make customer service more efficient. Present these ideas in a curious, helpful, and non judgmental way.
  7. Don’t stop applying for jobs while you are waiting to hear back from a home builder. Most job seekers are rejected by over 15 employers before landing a job.  Learn from your mistakes, and keep applying until you get the right offer.  Worst case scenario, you will be juggling multiple job offers. That’s a good thing.
  8. Dress for success. Maybe appearances shouldn’t matter so much, but they do. The first few minutes of an interview are when you get to make that critical first impression. Be sure you’re dressed appropriately, in formal business attire when you go in for an interview.
  9. Storytelling during a job interview is an excellent way to share your experience and skills. One way to show the employer what you’re actually like is to tell a story. When you’re asked questions during a job interview, relay the specific skills and experience you have, as well as how you handled the situations you’re asked about. The more concrete information you provide, the more the hiring manager will know how qualified you are.
  10. References can make a big difference in getting hired. References are important, and employers check them. Get recommendations from bosses, co-workers, clients, subordinates, and suppliers. Store them on sites like LinkedIn and share them whenever possible.
